Biden orders closure of federal government agencies on Jan. 9

All federal government agencies and departments will be shut down on January 9, according to a statement from the White House.

President Joe Biden issued an executive order directing the closure of government agencies and executive departments to show respect for former President Jimmy Carter who died on Sunday at age 100.

When a president dies, it’s common for the day of their funeral to be treated like a federal holiday, with federal offices closed.

The statement said some federal departments and agencies may remain open “for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need.”
