Donald Trump Takes a Major Stand on Abortion Issue

President Donald Trump's administration moved Wednesday to drop a federal case challenging Idaho's strict abortion ban, according to the Associated Press, marking one of the administration's first major actions on reproductive rights since the president took office in January.

Newsweek filed an online contact form with the DOJ for comment via email on Wednesday.

Why It Matters

The Department of Justice's filing to dismiss the case, which argues that Idaho emergency-room doctors treating pregnant women should be allowed to provide abortions if needed to save the mother's life or avoid severe health consequences, could have far-reaching implications for emergency medical care nationwide.

The move is unsurprising given court filings yesterday as well as Trump's tenure during his first presidential term, in which he appointed three conservative justices—Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett—who voted to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that had established a constitutional right to abortion.
