Presidents Day traces its origins to George Washington's Birthday (February 22), which was officially recognized as a federal holiday in January 1879.
In June 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, shifting the observance of Washington’s Birthday to the third Monday in February and officially designating Columbus Day as a federal holiday. When the law took effect in 1971, the proximity of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (February 12) to the newly scheduled holiday inspired marketers and advertisers to popularize Presidents Day sales, deals, and events.
This year, the Presidents Day falls on Monday, February 17.
