Speaker Johnson Announces Males Will Be Banned from Women’s Bathrooms on Capitol Hill

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Wednesday his intention to ban biological males who identify as transgender women from using women’s bathrooms and locker rooms on Capitol Hill.

“All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,” Johnson said in a statement.

“It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol. Women deserve women’s only spaces.”

The move comes as Representative Nancy Mace (R., S.C.) pushes to include in the upcoming House rules package a measure to prevent incoming transgender representative Sarah McBride (D., Del.), formerly known as Tim McBride, from using women’s facilities. McBride is the first transgender-identifying lawmaker elected to Congress.

House rules give the speaker “general control” over the Capitol’s facilities. The House sergeant-at-arms would be responsible for enforcing the new restroom policy once enacted.
