US Supreme Court declines to hear Karen Read's double jeopardy appeal in murder case

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday denied Karen Read's double jeopardy appeal, which her defense team filed earlier this month.

Read's defense team asked the nation's highest court to throw out two of the three charges against her, including second-degree murder, in the death of her boyfriend John O'Keefe, a Boston police officer.

Read's attorneys claimed her retrial would violate the double jeopardy clause because the jury in her first trial unanimously acquitted her on two charges behind closed doors and were only undecided on the manslaughter charge before a mistrial was declared.

Former Attorney General Martha Coakley said the denial is not surprising.
